Magical recipes for a Harry Potter-themed kids party

Feast On These Memorable Harry Potter Foods Summertime is always a magical time for kids, but especially when it coincides with the final Harry Potter movie release Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part II. Add a Harry Potter party to the mix with the appropriate Harry Potter food, and this week could make your child’s “Summer of 2011 Greatest Memories” list.

Hogwart

As a mere Muggle, you'll never experience the mouth-watering foods that were served in the Great Hall. But you can try to recreate some of those fantastic foods, perfect for a Harry Potter-themed party for kids (adults will enjoy them, too). There are no secrets – it only takes a little creativity to serve a celebratory feast like you'd find Hogwarts School!

Easy Pumpkin Juice

Served anytime at Hogwarts, whether for breakfast, lunch or dinner, this is a great drink to serve for a Harry Potter-themed party, day or night.

Serves 4 people

Ingredients:5 cups apple juice1 cup pumpkin puree1 teaspoon honey2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spiceDirections:
    Use a large pitcher to mix and serve your juice. Add all the ingredients to the pitcher and mix together. Refrigerate the mixture for at least an hour.The juice may be thicker than you're used to. If so, strain the juice for a thinner beverage.Serve the juice chilled or over ice cubes
Butterbeer "Brewed" for a Kid

This non-alcoholic version for kids is served chilled. As a favorite of young wizards, this drink is sure to be thirst-quenching for your party guests.

Serves 4 people

Ingredients:1 cup brown sugar2 tablespoons water6 tablespoon butter1/2 teaspoon salt1/2 teaspoon cider vinegar3/4 cup heavy cream, divided1/2 teaspoon rum extract4 (12 ounce) bottles cream sodaDirections:
    Using a small saucepan over medium heat, add the brown sugar and water and whisk together. Bring to a gentle boil, stirring often. Using a candy thermometer, make sure the mixture reaches 240 degrees F.Once the appropriate temperature is reached, add the salt, vinegar and about a quarter of the heavy cream. Remove from the heat and allow the mixture to cool. After the mixture has cooled, stir in the rum extract.Using a medium-sized bowl, combine 2 tablespoons of the mixture and the rest of the heavy cream. Beat well with a mixer until thick.Using 4 tall glasses to serve the beer, divide the brown sugar mix between them. Add 1/4 cup of cream soda to each glass and stir to mix well.Use the remaining cream soda to fill each glass to the top. Top each glass with the remaining whipped topping.
Rock Cakes

These cookies take on the look, but thankfully not the tooth-damaging impact, of the ones served by Hagrid.

Makes one dozen cookies

Ingredients:2 cups all-purpose flour1/2 cup granulated sugar1 teaspoon baking powderZest from small orangeJuice from half a small orange1/2 teaspoon cinnamon1/4 teaspoon salt8 tablespoons cold butter1 large egg1/3 cup milk1 cup raisins or dried cranberriesNonstick cooking sprayDirections:
    Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a cookie sheet with the nonstick spray and lightly flour it.In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, cinnamon and salt.Use your fingers to break apart the butter into the dry ingredients. Rub together until the consistency is very crumbly. Add the sugar, fruit and orange zest and combined.In a small bowl, beat the egg and add the milk and orange juice. Pour this into the flour mixture and fold it together until a stiff dough forms.Drop the dough from a teaspoon onto the cookie sheet, about 2 inches apart. Don't flatten the drops, but keep them rocky and rough looking.Bake for about 25 minutes or until the cookies are firm and the bottoms are golden. Cool on a wire rack.
Licorice Wands

Serve these tasty treats, similar to what you might find on the Hogwarts Express. A fun, magical treat for your guests.

Makes 24 wands

Ingredients:24 twisted licorice sticks (preferably black licorice)6 ounces vanilla almond bark or candy mold disksDecorative candy sprinkles in any color or shapeDirections:
    Line a baking sheet with parchment or waxed paper.Place the almond bark (chopped) or candy disks in a microwave-safe, medium-sized bowl.Microwave on high heat for about 1 minute (or a bit longer) and stir. Continue to microwave in 15-second increments until the candy has melted.Dip half of the licorice stick into the melted candy. Immediately dust the candy coating with the sprinkles and place on the baking sheet to allow the chocolate to harden further.
Easy Nut Brittle

This yummy treat will be sure to stand out to your guests (even though Harry almost misses them in Mrs. Weasley's package).

Makes about 24 pieces

Ingredients: 2 cups sugar8 tablespoons unsalted butter1/2 cup water, plus 2 additional tablespoons1/3 cup light corn syrup1/2 teaspoon baking soda1-1/2 teaspoons salt12 ounces whole, dry-roasted and salted peanuts (you can use any type of roasted and salted nuts)Nonstick cooking sprayDirections:
    Spray a baking sheet with the nonstick sprayUsing a large saucepan, add the sugar, butter, water and corn syrup and mix together until the sugar is wet.Heat the mixture over high heat, stirring constantly, until it turns a light golden color. The mixture should cook until it reaches 300 degrees F. on your candy thermometer.Remove from heat and add the baking soda and salt. Whisk together. Use caution, as the mixture will begin to rise and bubble in the pan.Add the nuts to the mixture.Quickly, before it has a chance to harden, pour the mixture over the baking sheet and spread it out using the back of a wooden spoon. Your mixture might not cover the entire pan. Allow the brittle to cool completely. Once cooled, break it apart into small pieces.
Chicken Drummettes

Not quite the chicken legs that Harry brought to Sirius, your guests will undoubtedly gobble up this smaller version!

Serves 8-10 people

Ingredients:2 pounds chicken drummettes, washed and excess skin removed1/2 cup light soy sauce1/4 cup honeyPepper to season2 teaspoons dried parsley1/2 cup (more as needed) crushed corn flake-type cerealNonstick cooking sprayDirections:
    Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F.In a small bowl, combine the soy sauce, honey, pepper and parsley. Place the mixture in a sealable plastic container, large enough to hold the drummettes. Add the drummettes and allow to marinade overnight.When the marinade is ready, put the cereal crumbs in a shallow dish. Roll the drummettes in the mixture and place them in a single layer in baking dish sprayed with the nonstick spray.Bake, uncovered, for about 30 minutes. Turn the drummettes over and bake for another 30 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through.
